The Mets drafted Bobby Gene Smith from the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1961 expansion draft. Smith started out the 1962 season with the Mets and appeared in 8 games before being traded to the Chicago Cubs on April 26 in exchange for Sammy Taylor. In his brief stint with the Mets Smith hit .136 (3-22) with two RBIs. Both his RBIs came on one swing of the bat on April 23rd against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He tripled home two runs in the Mets first win in franchise history.
