On July 31, 1995, the Mets traded all-star pitcher Bret Saberhagen to the Colorado Rockies. One of the players they received in return was right-handed pitcher Juan Acevedo. However, Acevedo would not appear in a game for the Mets until 1997.
He made his Met debut on June 18, 1997 against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. He entered the game in the 7th inning and pitched 2 1/3 of scoreless relief allowing 1 hit while striking out 3. However, the Mets would lose the game 3-2.
Acevedo would finish the season with the Mets appearing in 25 games, all but two were out of the bullpen. He put up respectable numbers, finishing with a 3-1 record and 3.59 ERA. He started two games in September and won both.
Following the season, the Mets traded Acevedo to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for left-handed pitcher Rigo Beltran.
While with the Mets Acevedo wore number 39.
