The Mets signed Shawn Gilbert a career minor league infielder as a free agent prior to the 1996 season. He spent the entire 1996 season with the Mets top minor league club the Norfolk Tides where he hit .256. After starting the 1997 season in the minors Gilbert finally made his major league debut with the Mets on June 2. He singled in his first major league at bat as a pinch hitter for pitcher Mark Clark. Gilbert appeared in 29 games for the Mets during the 96 season, mainly as a pinch hitter and late inning defensive replacement. However he hit just .136 with one home run and one RBI.
Gilbert appeared in three games for the Mets in 1998 before being traded to the St Louis Cardinals on June 10 in exchange Wayne Kirby. In 32 games for the Mets over two seasons Gilbert batted .120.
