The Mets signed shortstop Wilfredo Tovar as an international free agent at the age of 16 in 2008. After spending 6 seasons in the minor leagues Tovar was brought up to the show as a September call up in 2013. He made his Major League debut on September 22 as the starting shortstop against the Philadelphia Phillies. He went 2 for 4 with an RBI in the Mets 4-3 victory. He would appear in 6 more games hitting .200 with 2 RBI’s.
Tovar returned to minors in 2014 and once again was called up in September. This time he appeared in just 2 games going 0 for 3 at the plate.
He played the entire 2015 season in the minors with the Las Vegas 51s, the Mets Triple A affiliate, before signing as a free agent with the Minnesota Twins in December 2015. In 9 career games for the Mets Tovar batted .167 (3 for 18) with 2 RBI’s.
