The Mets acquired outfielder Ben Johnson along with Jon Adkins from the San Diego Padres in exchange for Heath Bell and Royce Ring on November 15, 2006. After starting the 2007 in the minors Johnson was brought up to New York at the end of May when the Mets outfield was riddled with injuries. He made his Met debut on May 29 against the San Francisco Giants as a late inning outfield replacement. He went 0 for 2 at the plate. He appeared in 8 more games before being sent back to the minors. He batted .185 with 1 RBI. His one RBI came on a sacrifice fly on June 2nd in the Mets 7-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Mets initially did not offer Johnson a contract for the 2008 season but then signed him to a minor league contract just prior to Spring Training. However, injuries took their toll on Johnson and he was eventually released in May.
While with the Mets Johnson wore number 4.
Ben Johnson also played for the San Diego Padres in 2005 and 2006.
