The Mets acquired left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas from the Florida Marlins prior to the 2007 season. Vargas spent the entire season in the minors except for two games when he was used as an emergency starter for the Mets. His first Met appearance occurred on May 17 where he gave up gave five runs over seven innings. Vargas earned a no decision since the Mets rallied in the bottom of the 9th inning to score five runs to win the game 6-5. Vargas made one more start for the Mets on July 3, this time he gave up 9 runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings and earned the loss.
Following the season Vargas was traded to the Seattle Mariners as part of a multi-player deal. In his two starts for the Mets he pitched 10 1/3 innings and posted an 0-1 record with a 12.19 ERA.
